My Running Mom

In the bustling tapestry of family life, amidst the whirlwind of school drop-offs and bedtime stories, there exists a mother who is a dedicated runner and avid marathoner. This mom is my friend and children's book author, Amanda Hodges. She sets an inspiring example for her children, demonstrating the transformative power of discipline, perseverance, and self-care. Running is very important to her and she's deeply passionate about this activity. When she approached me about taking on a book about a running mom I couldn't stop thinking about a roadrunner - because I'm a Texas artist, author, and mom.

It was so easy to visualize a roadrunner getting up in the earliest hours of dawn or even taking advantage of the fading light of dusk, lacing up her sneakers and hitting the pavement. I loved thinking about her chicks cheering her on from the sidelines with infectious enthusiasm. What would a little roadrunner do as he watched his mom conquer mile after mile with unwavering determination?  I knew I would work with her on this project. I know that although kids may not fully grasp the significance of their mother's accomplishments, they understand, on a fundamental level, that her commitment to her sport is a reflection of her commitment to herself—to her health, her happiness, and her sense of purpose.

Each page of text also carries on the running theme with snacks, medals, and other running gear. I worked to convey the mom's dedication to training for a marathon, her children witness firsthand the sacrifices she makes and the challenges she overcomes, marveling at her resilience and unwavering resolve. And when the big day finally arrives, they stand proudly alongside her, shouting words of encouragement as she embarks on her journey, a testament to the unwavering support and love that surrounds her. What a great story!

I believe that each story has deeper meanings. My Running Mom isn't  just the victories that define the running mom's legacy—it's the lessons she imparts along the way. Through her actions, she teaches her children the importance of setting goals, embracing challenges, and never giving up, no matter how daunting the road ahead may seem. She shows them that success is not measured in medals or accolades but in the strength of one's spirit and the courage to pursue one's dreams. These are important lessons for all readers!
I loved depicting a dedicated mom, her supportive family, and focusing on tiny details little eyes would find (like the egg-o-nomic sitter for the egg). Not every mom or parent can relate to running marathons, but every parent can relate to trying to find time for themselves in the busy hustle of daily life.

The book is told from the perspective of the mom's oldest chick - reminding us that our children look up to us, watch what we do, and take pride in our accomplishments. We are their first heroes, their first supporters, and their first community. It's important to connect with them, build their confidence, and support them. The little chick dreams of running fast just like his mother, and this sweet story develops the relationship between mother and child by building a connection around a common interest.

In celebrating the running mom's successes, her children learn that true fulfillment comes not from external validation but from the sense of accomplishment that comes from within—from setting goals, working hard, and never losing sight of what truly matters. And as they grow and embark on their own journeys, they carry with them the lessons they've learned from their mother—the importance of perseverance and the power of self-belief.

I loved working on this sweet story.
